Starbucks (the loop and hwy 46)

Image
I don't normally go to Starbucks, but I decided to go today. I was hoping to work at the new Boba place nearby, but they don't open until 11 :(  The inside of the shop wasn't too busy. There were a few people, but plenty of seating. The baristas were very busy though. There were a crazy number of pickup and drive-through orders (normal, I know). However, the employees were very friendly and I got my drink fairly quickly.  It's hard to deny, the drinks here are delicious. I'm an iced latte guy, and the pistachio latte I got was real good.  I don't like the idea of supporting a large chain over the many excellent local places we have, but a Starbucks every once in a while is ok I think :).  The seating inside is made for people to sit and work. It has several small tables with nearby outlets. They also have an outdoor seating area which is a plus for me since I really enjoy working outside.  Also, the employees here are very cheerful and friendly.  Coffee: I ...

Southhaus Coffee (Austin)

Image
This is one of those times that I'm glad I live in New Braunfels. I'm in Austin today and decided to try Southhaus Coffee. It's a hip little coffee shop like you would expect from the Austin area. It's also very crowded like you would expect from the Austin area. I tried their signature Latte, dark chocolate orange. It's pretty good honestly. But I got a tiny cup for $6.  There is a nice little sitting area outside. I was able to find a seat, but it's a little cold today. I would have liked to sit inside, but again, crowded.  There is a nice bagel place right next to it. I got a delicious everything bagel there.  If I'm back in the area, I'll probably come back, but IMO there are so many better options in New Braunfels.  Coffee: I've only had one latte here, but it's very good. Too expensive for what you get though.  Food: They have some pastries and breakfast tacos. There is a bagel place next door.    Privacy: Not private. It's very busy.  ...

Forty-Six Coffee, Cafe, and Catering

Image
This is my favorite place to work. I stop by here at least once a week. I like it so much that I'm afraid to share it with people because I don't want it to get too busy. This is the Forty-Six cafe. It's located inside of the McKenna children's museum. There are a few reasons why I like it so much.  1. It has a great outdoor sitting area. It's shaded and there are very few people that ever go out there. It has a few outlets I can plug into, and the wifi works well outside. With the number of nice weather days in New Braunfels, a good outdoor working space is essential for me.  2. I love the coffee here. They have one of my favorite lattes ever, the Forty-Sixer. There are also a wide variety of drink options.  3. OMG the food is so good here. The muffins are great. The kolaches as well. AND I've had several lunches here that were just so so good. From the regular menu, I like to get the buffalo chicken sandwich. They also have regular specials that rotate. One of...

Barnhouse (Spring Branch)

Image
If you're in the Bulverde/Spring Branch area, You should check out the Barnhouse coffee shop and bakery.  It's just off the 46 right before you get to highway 281 (coming from New Braunfels) so it's an easy stop if you're crossing Comal County. It's a medium busy shop that serves a variety of coffee and tea as well as other drinks. They also have delicious pastries, oatmeal, and an excellent breakfast sandwich.  The noise level is normal coffee shop noise. There are several places to sit as well as free wifi. They also have a small outdoor seating area.  The big thing they lack is outlets. There are very few places you can plug in a laptop. However, it's a nice shop in a convenient area with a friendly staff that serves good coffee. I stop here regularly to spend a few hours on work.  Coffee: In my opinion, the coffee is excellent. I'm an iced latte guy, and they make it just right.  Try the salted caramel Barnchata. Also, they have a 32oz option which is...

Resolute Baptist Hospital

Image
The Resolute Baptist Hospital in the Creekside area of New Braunfels might not be the first place you think of when looking for places to work, but this place is a hidden gem for remote workers.  If you go through the main hospital doors and turn right then left, you'll see a small coffee shop where you can grab a coffee or snack before sitting down to work. As you proceed down the hall, you'll see a large seating area with a wide variety of seating types. Keep going and you'll eventually turn right and see the cafeteria with more seating and a nice outdoor patio.  I have never seen more than a hand full of people sitting here, and most of them are concentrated near the cafeteria. There are several places to sit that have outlets, and there is a shaded area outside to sit when the weather is nice. Be aware though, the doors to get back in from the outside area are often locked.  Coffee: The coffee shop serves Starbucks coffee. It has some food items as well. It's a...

About me and this blog

Image
My name is Chris Dayley and I'm a college English professor at Texas State University. I moved to New Braunfels 4 years ago with my wife and 4 kids.  As a college professor, I don't have a regular 8-5 schedule. In fact, I only need to go into the university when I have a meeting or I'm teaching a class. The majority of my work is done from my laptop. About a year into my new job as a professor, I started to hate being at home all the time. I found it difficult to be productive, and it was just plain boring. Because of this, I began seeking out public places where I could work.  I've spent a couple of years now seeking out these remote working spots and I want to share the places I've discovered, and the places I have yet to discover, with you. Each blog post I write will review a place to work remotely. For each place, I'll review the available food/drinks, crowd/noise level, seating comfort, wifi, available outlets, and anything else that may be of interest t...
